WebSphere Technology Zone: System i and WebSphere… Not your father’s AS/400!
On January 31, 2006 IBM announced its latest line of System i machines equipped with POWER 5 technology across the entire line. The newest entry models include new accelerator features that can be turned on with a soft command enabling the machine to increase CPU performance 3 to 5 times. Now System i’s smallest clients can start simple with traditional business workloads and add WebSphere workloads by turning on this new feature.
Another benefit of the System i machine is that every system now comes equipped with WebSphere Application Server Express and doesn’t have any processor restrictions. The installation of WebSphere Application Server Express has been streamlined to be up and ready to go in less that an hour. Combine this with System i’s virtualization capability and any WebSphere workload can run on this platform, whether natively on i5/OS, in a logical partition running POWER Linux or AIX 5L, or on a externally attached xSeries Server or Blade Center.
Need tools? WebSphere Development Studio is a staple on virtually every System i machine, since most folks have it for the compilers. Bundled with this product is WebSphere Development Studio Client, which includes the following:
- Rational Web Developer – to provide you with a standards-based Integrated Development Environment (Eclipse)
- Remote System Explorer – to edit traditional RPG and COBOL applications
- Special plug-ins – to allow the rapid development of Web front ends for RPG applications and a special one-step wizard that can transform any traditional RPG program into a web service.
- 5250 Re-facing tools – to transform your legacy applications (i.e. applications that work) into GUI in minutes through the use of the IBM WebFacing Tool and HATS
- Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) – to provide a fourth generation language that is easy to use, thereby enabling any developer to generate mission critical Java or COBOL applications in weeks.
- And much more…
Besides the name, System i has changed a lot the last few years. Now on its 9th generation of RISC technology, this platform is definitely not your father’s AS/400. Here are some useful resources where you can learn more about System i and its support for WebSphere software.
