GWC at SpeechTEK Conference in New York
City
The Global WebSphere Community recently appeared at the SpeechTEK Technology conference in New York. The GWC and IBM organized a booth, in which 9 business partners presented their products and offerings to a sold-out crowd. The online component of this campaign is the Speech and Voice Technology Zone, which is now live on WebSphere.org! It allows IBM Speech and Voice Business Partners to showcase their products, provide their news to the GWC, and link to the GWC Partner Zone. Check it out here. ![]() Bangalore WUG
Congratulations to the Bangalore WUG, which signed up over 100 members at a recent WebSphere Technical Conference!!! Ashish Mungi, who leads this group, tells us the secret of his success: The User Group session was well organized: flyers for the GWC/ Bangalore WUG had been prepared in advance for the WTC, and were included in the conference registration kit for distribution to all delegates. Registration forms were handed out to all the people who attended the User Group overview session, and were also available at the conference help desk after the session. The audio-visual facilities (projector and microphone) for the session were good. Overall facilities for the session (seating, etc) were adequate, but the turnout for the session was more than expected! The billboards outside other conference rooms flashed information regarding the session, encouraging people to attend. The session was also well-positioned: the time slot for the session was after all the elective sessions for Day 1 had completed, and before the networking dinner in the evening. This allowed the maximum number of people to attend the user group session. During the session, I gave an overview of the GWC, its goals and objectives, membership statistics (user group chapters, distribution across the world, and the chapters in India), and the features available on the GWC site. I also gave an overview of the Bangalore WUG, and encouraged people to join the user group in order to participate in group activities and network with peers. The session was well received, and people had questions around how they could enroll in WUGs within their cities, how they could start new user groups in case their city did not have an existing user group, how they could leverage GWC site features such as blogs and forums, etc. Attendance and Registration of New Members: The turnout for the session was higher than expected - around 110-120 people attended the session, and around 110 of them registered for GWC / WUG Bangalore through the registration forms. An IBM cap was given as a goodie to each person who registered - it was our way of welcoming them on board the User Groups. Based on the event attendance for Day 1 (around 310 people attended Day 1 of the conference), around 33% delegates attended the User Group session and registered for GWC / WUG. |

Project Zero, a web 2.0 development and execution environment now in incubator phase, has just made its source code available to the public. In addition, the Project Zero development team has just completed a piece of work which illustrates the integration of the client-side mashup technology in QEDWiki and the server-side mashup technology in Project Zero. This work allows the Project Zero Assemble component to mashup various feeds on the server side into "the perfect feed" (e.g., monthly summary reports) that is to be presented to mashup consumers. Project Zero allows developers to "create, assemble, and execute" dynamic web applications in an agile manner, using scripting runtimes for both Groovy and PHP. It is being developed using the Community Driven Commercial Development model. The Sphere Magazine

IBM Press Books and
Redbooks - two great resources for IT
skill-building
Books are wonderful resources to both build and refresh skills. They provide a wonderful opportunity for self-paced learning while becoming a handy reference guide for use on-the-job. IBM offers many great resources to build your library of technical and business skills - two of which are IBM Press Books and IBM Redbooks. IBM Press is the official publisher of IBM retail books for professionals and students, and provides a variety of books to suit individual learning styles. It has a large variety of resources covering software, severs, business, and on demand topics. New books are added each month. IBM Press publishes books that are authored by eminent architects, engineers and consultants, as well as business leaders, with contributions from other experts working in the IBM community. IBM Redbooks provide product positioning and value guidance, installation and implementation experiences, typical solution scenarios, step-by-step "how-to" guidelines, while often including sample code and other supporting materials. Redbooks are developed and published by the IBM International Technical Support Organization, ITSO. Content is available in the domains of application development, IBM System i, p, storage, x, z, Information Management software, Infrastructure solutions, Linux, Lotus, Rational, Tivoli and WebSphere. In each domain you can find a list of the most popular Redbooks, a list of the most recent Drafts, Redpapers (short technical documents written to reflect working experiences on a specific topic), Workshops (for highly experienced professionals on complex technical topics), Residencies (where Redbooks are developed over a 2 to 8 week process) and much more.
