Chicago NW Suburb WUG
The Chicago NW Suburb WUG held its 4th meeting in the series to discuss the use of WAS CE in an open source software development environment.

In this meeting series, the group first decided on a project that can leverage IBM's open source software development tools. The group's decision was to design and implement a library management and loan system with add capability for discussions and Amazon web services links. The Chicago IBM Innovation Center also set up a hands-on lab to allow each attendee to install his/her own WAS CE and Eclipse development tools. Each session was attended by 15 to 30 people. For many in the group, it is the first introduction to the complete end to end architecture of a WAS environment.

The project is now promoted to the www.assembla.com where members are collaborating over the web to carry on this project."

WebSphere Case Studies from GWC Members
Click here to view a case study from GWC member Ahmed Abdel-Monsef Mohamed Ahmed. Ahmed works for Mantrac/Unatrac International Group in Egypt, as a Special Project Engineer in their IT Department. He is the first GWC member to contribute his work, which will be showcased to the rest of the GWC as a success story in WebSphere. The problem he faced is described here:

Although Main frames and AS400 platform green screen interfacing has a great advantage in its access speed through multiple users through telnet but unfortunately it is not user friendly compared with recent web-based application using .NET and Java server pages which are GUI (Graphical User Interface).

So, from this point it was aimed to solve this issue concerning the GUI interface of AS400 applications which are already up and running with zero down time.

In fact, solving this issue needs third party applications integrated with Main Frame and iSeries servers but costs a lot of effort and money plus integration may be not efficient.
